The government has a late Xmas gift for you: a new regulation! Briefly, from 1st January 2007, companies in the UK must include certain information on their web sites and in their e-mail footers or they will breach the Companies Act and risk a fine. This, together with the Ecommerce Regulations, means the following minimum information must appear on any business site:

1 The name, geographic address and e-mail address of the business

2 The legal name of the organisation with which the customer is contracting if different from the trading name

3 If the business is a company or LLP, the registered office address, place of registration (eg England and Wales) and the registration number.

4 If the business is a member of a trade or professional association, membership details, including any registration number, should be provided.

5 If the business has a VAT number, this should be stated - even if the web site is not being used for e-commerce transactions.

Retail sites must also comply with the Distance Selling Regulations, which regulate businesses that sell to consumers. All sites (whether B2B or B2C) quoting prices must do so clearly and unambiguously and state whether they include tax and delivery costs. It is also wise to include (and draw attention to) any standard terms and conditions of trading on the site.
